Settled in the heart of Central Pennsylvania in Gettysburg is a piece of history that every American appreciates. The Battle of Gettysburg, one of the largest battles during the Civil War, tied with Abraham Lincoln’s famous Gettysburg Address provided the foundation for a town that draws several thousands of visitors each year to capture the experience firsthand.

The Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center was design and constructed in 2008 to provide a place where history can truly ‘come to life.’ To date, more than 6 million visitors (over 1 million visitors alone in 2014) have come through the doors of this building to study the artifacts and learn more about the incredible sacrifices made during the battle. This 139,000 SF LEED Gold building, located on a 45 acre site, also welcomes more than 100,000 students every year.

A few of the highlights of the project include the following:

-          Includes geo-thermal heating and cooling systems

-          Exterior column timber posts were salvaged from a 100 year old plus barn in Gettysburg

-          Interior exposed timber

-          State of the art café and catering kitchen

-          Granite stone was extracted from a local quarry

-          Includes (2) theaters capable of holding 200 plus people in each space

-          Restored cyclorama includes 360 degree mural painting and 3D diorama effects

-          Modern day branding, graphics, and signage

-          Integrated lighting control system

Please join SMPS Central Pennsylvania for a tour of the Museum and Visitor Center first hand. The event will be led by representatives from Kinsley Construction and the Gettysburg Foundation. Participants will also be able to experience first-hand the theater and cyclorama areas as part of the tour. Following the tour will be a networking event at Gettysburg Eddie’s downtown.

NOTE: We will be collecting donations again this year at every meeting for our charity, the United Methodist Home for Children (UMHC). Last year, we collected an entire van full of items for the children and presented those gifts along with a cash donation at our annual holiday event!
