Photography Skills Program Part 1

We live in a highly-visual world requiring a constant stream of project photographs – for proposals, websites, presentations, and social media.  Whether or not we plan to hire a professional photographer, the reality is that when we need an image, we often need it now.  So marketing and business development professionals have become “staff photographers.”  Sometimes the images will only be used a few times until a professional is able to “shoot” the project.  Other times, the photos we take will serve as the completed project record, and the only images available for marketing use.  But how many of us studied photography?  This informative classroom-based session will cover some of the basic, but highly effective, techniques used by the pros – and most apply to you whether you are using an advanced DSLR or a more basic compact camera.  Common challenging situations will be addressed, as well as the solutions to overcoming them.  And because post-processing can often be as important as pushing the shutter, a number of critical “digital darkroom” practices will also be shared.

About Our Presenter:
This session will be led by Scott D. Butcher, FSMPS, CPSM.  Scott is vice president of JDB Engineering and the current president of the SMPS Foundation.  Although his degree is in marketing and his career has been spent in professional services marketing and business development, Scott developed an interest in photography while he was in college.  Less than a year after graduating, Scott completed the New York Institute of Photography training program, and embarked on the serious hobby of photography.  He regularly shoots project work for JDB Engineering and Nutec Group, and has had more than 1500 of his photographs published in magazines, visitors guides, and relocation guides.  He’s sold some of his images for advertising, and formerly participated in art shows as a fine arts photographer.  The majority of Scott’s published work has come in his own books, where he has combined research, writing, and photography into a series of local interest books including Historic Architecture of Pennsylvania, Lancaster County Reflections, Gettysburg Perspectives, York: America’s Historic Crossroads, Delaware Reflections, and Tucson Perspectives, among others.  The next book in his local interest series will be Harrisburg Reflections, to be released in late 2015.
